History of PCB

PCB AssemblyIn the mid-1930s, an Austrian engineer named Paul Eisler invented the printed circuit board while he was designing radio sets. Not long after, those radios were vastly used in the United States during World War II. After that event, the application and use of PCBs became commercial especially in the electronics industry.

The circuit boards have no significant use until you solder electronic components onto it. The components can either be SMD or thru-hole. Hence, manufacturers can either employ SMT (surface mount technology) or thru-hole technology, depending on the type of device being used.

Materials Needed for PCB Assembly

• Printed Circuit Board (PCB)

• Electronic Components

• Solder Flux

• Soldering Tools (solder paste, solder wire, solder preforms, solder bar, etc.)

• Soldering Equipment (SMT equipment, wave-soldering machine, soldering station, inspection equipment, testing equipment, etc.)

After gathering all the above materials arranged, you may begin the PCB assembly process. You may contact us at PCBNet for a more comprehensive and suitable assembly approach.

PCB Assembly Process

There are several stages involved in the PCBA process, including, but not limited to:

• Solder Paste Application

Pcb fabricationSolder paste is applied to the areas of the circuit board where soldering is required. Traditional way to this is with a solder screen through which the paste is dispensed and applied onto the component pads. A modern solder paste application method involves jetting technology that allows the paste buildup of small dots to reach the proper and exact amount for each pad. This non-contact method is far more advantageous compared to traditional paste dispensing method.

• Pick and Place

During the pick and place stage, a machine filled with reels picks each component up and places it on the proper position on the PCB. The components are held in that place by the tension brought about by the solder paste.

• Soldering

You can choose from different soldering methods. One is wave soldering wherein the solder paste application is no longer necessary since the soldering agent is already provided by the machine. However, the most commonly used method now is the reflow soldering method which uses an oven with extremely high temperature that melts and turns the paste into liquid metal.

• Inspection

The boards must undergo inspection to ensure there are no defects and the quality is maintained. An automatic optical inspection machine is used to inspect surface mount PCBs that has a hundred components or more. This machine is able to detect misplaced or incorrect components and poor solder joints.

• Testing

Testing is necessary in all PCBA process. This guarantees that the boards are properly functioning and can work effectively with the external world. Different testing methods can be employed, such as Rigid Needle, CT scanning and Bed of Nails testing method.

Surface Mount Technology

SMT or Surface Mount Device is an assembly process used for SMD (surface mount device) electronic components. These components do not have legs or heads and are mounted onto the board’s surface. The electronic components, equipment and other soldering tools used in this process differ from those used in thru-hole soldering method.
