The Career – Sugar Ray Robinson (part 1 of 4)
Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | part 4
Born: May 3rd, 1921
173(108)-19(1)-6 (2 no contests)
1,400+ rounds boxed with a 54% KO percentage
I was surprised to see that Ray was only stopped once in 200 professional fights. That was to Joey Maxim back in 1952 when Sugar Ray retired on his stool after round 13, suffering from heat prostration. Just to give you an idea of just how hot it was that day the referee Goldstein had to be replaced by Ray Miller in Round 10. Robinson retired from boxing in December 1952 and didn’t return to the ring until October 1954.
E-mail me with any comments or contributions jmc6171@hotmail.com. Rueben Carter, Jake LaMotta, Muhammad Ali have all had movies made about them why not Ray? I would love to see a motion picture made about his life.
